The STS-5A downhole seismometer consists of the STS-2.5 high-performance wideband seismometer and an electric universal joint system for on-site leveling. The entire system is integrated into a cylindrical metal casing with a diameter of 5.75 inches. STS-5A has an interface that can be directly connected to the Quanerra Q330 series data recording system for controlling seismometers and azimuth adjustment systems, without the need for a "control box". Supports advanced functions of remote control of devices through bidirectional RS-422 serial ports, and conventional operations generally do not require the use of serial ports. The standard STS-5A system is equipped with a 40 meter long underground cable. The sensor packaging and cable design can ensure that the instrument can withstand continuous immersion in water depths of over 500 meters.
The universal joint system is only powered when sensors are installed, removed, or periodically readjusted. When not in use, the universal joint and internal controller automatically shut down completely. The performance and electrical characteristics of STS-5A are comparable or better than STS-2.5.
The reliability and high performance of STS-5A are excellent choices for underground seismic observation.
